Ah, friends! Heather and I had dinner last night with two of our closest dearest friends. No, really. This is exactly how I mean to describe them. Close and dear. How do I explain ...
- Do you have any friends that when you see them, you simply can't get words out fast enough? You want to know what's happening in their lives so badly because you MUST be a part of the very latest? And they simply MUST know right away every important detail in your life?
- Do you have any friends that when you walk in their house, you feel like it is an extension of your own home? They welcome you ... quite ... like family. They listen about your children ... quite ... like those children are their children? You want to know every particular detail
about who their daughter is dating because you are very concerned that this young man behaves in a proper way? (glad to know that so far, so good)
- Do you have any friends that when you see them you don't bother to bring ANY of your (rather impressive collection of) masks? So genuine are our friends that I think Heather and I learn about each other when we go visit. She'll tell them something and I'll think, "How come I never heard that?" :)
- Do you have any friends that no matter how late it is and no matter how much the baby sitter is making per hour and no matter what time we have to get up in the morning, you never want your time with them to be over? Heather and I are notorious early-leavers. At parties, we are invariably the first to leave. H gets it honest from her parents as they are early-leavers too. Sometimes, it is a good thing but with certain friends, we are often amazed at how quickly time passes.
I'm proud to announce that we have such friends. Twelve years ago, we went to Hawaii with Sport and TC and the goal was to make music together. He's a singer, I'm a singer. I didn't realize it was to be the beginning of a wonderful relationship, the depth of which you truly only realize when you go through difficult times.
Who do you call when you need to brag on your kids?
With whom do you share the most embarrassing family secrets?
Is there someone in your life that you can call when life has dumped you in the gutter?
God has blessed me with an inordinate number of close, intimate 'dude' friends. My weaknesses, I suppose, are such that I need that much support. I crave that camaraderie. I thrive on dialogue.
I thank God for my friends.
